This was legit. I couldn’t believe how easily I could get true, real film looks from my Canon 5D MarkII files. I’ve tried before to create my own “film” look from my digital files, but let’s be honest. I never “nailed” it. Well now I can nail it with one click. It’s ridiculous just how easy it is for me now.

Below is my first serious use of VSCO Film. Most of these shots are from a shoot I did just days ago of my friend and country artist, Laura Bell Bundy. I shot the album artwork for Laura Bell’s upcoming album the day before this shoot below. But we wanted to do another more intimate, honest photoshoot in Malibu. I figured VSCO Film would be the perfect editing solution for these photos cause Laura Bell wanted a vintage “Marilyn Monroe Beach” vibe.  Boy, was I right. I absolutely love the final outcome below. I will now be using VSCO Film a LOT more from this point forward.

I also snuck in some recent shots of Jill Wagner (from ABC’s “Wipeout”) and my friend Ryan O’Neal from Sleepingatlast.

material connection disclosure

I’ve always heard people raving about the iPhone and I’ve always dismissed it as being nowhere near legit. “Surely a 5 megapixel phone camera really can’t be that special or fun” is basically what was going through my mind. My friend Chase Jarvis was always raving about it and even published a book of iPhone images. I still wasn’t on board.

It wasn’t until a recent trip to Haiti that I jumped on the “iPhoneography” train. I was in Haiti recently with Hope International on a volunteer 2-day trip. I was shooting a lot with my DSLR during the trip but during their business meetings with clients, I would sneak out and start playing with my iPhone. I would download as many apps as possible at night and then just experiment all day. Needless to say, I fell in love and was obsessed for 4 or 5 days, editing like crazy on my iPhone. That’s right… ALL images were solely shot and edited with the iPhone.

Now to answer the question that I’ve been asked a million times: “What apps did you use?” I used a mixture of FilterStorm, Plastic Bullet, Camera+, Hipstamatic, Pano, CrossProcess, Incredibooth, and Lo-Mob…

Imogen Heap is one of my all-time favorite artists. She’s one of the few people that fits the word “Genius”. I think that word is way overused these days but not in Imogen’s case. Getting to witness her work in her home studio was truly like watching a master at work. She writes, records, produces, sings, mixes, you name it. It’s all her. Not many artists that I know wear all those hats these days, especially with such incredible results.

I’ve now photographed her 4 times… Nashville, 2 Days in LA and one day in London at her house. Below is a mix of some of my favorite images from these shoots. There’s tons more. I’m pretty sure I have a coffee table book’s worth. I love working with Imogen cause we’ve developed a great friendship. I feel like 2 kids exploring the world together. She’s often drawn to the same textures and light that I am. We spent a day just walking around LA together as she shopped. I had my camera along for the ride… literally. The 4th image below is in the car as we were on our way to another store. Several others were caught right outside a store or in an alleyway. No matter where we are or what kind of setup is involved, we always seem to find something interesting together.
