Photo Critique (Live from NY)
September 08, 2009 So recently my friend Andy Davis hopped online with his camera and was broadcasting live on Twitter. He just stumbled upon it and tried it out to see how it works. Within a few minutes he had almost 200 Twitter followers online staring at him. He didn't know what to do so he started playing some songs live... an impromptu live Twitter performance if you will... or a Twerformance... or a Twoncert. (Sorry I couldn't resist mocking the ole TW-added-to-every-Twitter-related-word trend). Anyway, the result was fascinating. Broadcasting live is nothing new but to integrate it with Twitter is something I hadn't seen before. We knew it was coming of course but it was pretty rad to see it happening. Plus Andy is an amazing performer so that certainly helped. All this to say, Andy's little experiment triggered an idea in my head for photographers. What if I did a live Photography critique? You all sent me links while I'm broadcasting, I share your photo with the rest of the crowd and discuss it live? I think the results would be interesting and would really help all of us in one way or another. I've never critiqued ANYTHING in my life but I'm interested in the process and helping others better themselves with photography. Plus I'm fascinated with social media and I've never seen or heard of this being done before via Twitter. It probably has but maybe not. And the idea of all of us exploring new territory with Social Media and Photography together could be an interesting experiment.
The only down side is you're going to have to look at me talk. AWKWARD. I wish you could only hear my voice instead of also seeing me but that's not how it works. Actually hopefully you'll be looking at the photos we're critiquing instead.
If all goes well today, I'd like to do this once a week. I think it will be yet another amazing step in bringing the Photography community together via Social Media.
So I'm in my crappy hotel room in NYC today. I will be hopping online at 4:30pm ET today to discuss your photos and answer any other misc. photography questions. Hopefully my internet connection will be able to handle it. Be sure to have a link to a specific JPG for us to look at. Don't send just a link to your website but a link to an actual jpg. Thanks!
Oh, and last thing. Be sure to follow me on Twitter and I'll post the link to the broadcast at 4:30.
Looking forward to speaking with you!

Sweet! A Twoto Twitique!
This sounds great! So, do we send you links via twitter? And do we send them now or after 4:30? Thanks!
You should try http://tinychat.com; you can have multiple cameras there, and the chat is a little more stable.
So realistically, you could bring two or three other photographers and have a panel. And that keeps the conversation flowing as well.
But for the record, the only times where I felt awkward was when you were talking about how you thought you we're being awkward :P.
I agree with Judson... twitcam is good... but it updates my twitter status everytime I post something. Maybe Tinychat is a good option.
Thought the critique was really good, and it worked well. I know you were conscious of it - but yeah, the overload of tweets was almost a bit much!! Maybe to try solve that you could 5-10 here and there, as opposed to a whole stack of them at a time!! That is the only criticism as such - everything else about it was really good!! :)
This was awesome Jeremy. Definitely do this again...please!
Such a great idea. Really felt connected. Nice that everyone had a chance to get an opinion from you, even though it was slightly crowded. I feel like this should happen more often, but I agree with Wes, maybe through a different chat client? It would free yours and our Twitter feeds up every time a new photo is posted.
I loved the live photo critique. It is very cool and helpful, please continue to do it. Thanks!
THANK YOU! I know it was difficult for you to read posts, copy/paste images, and keep the critique going all at the same time. Maybe have someone else choose the images while you're critiquing another, or choose them all 5-10 minutes before you start talking so you're not doing everything at once. It was great help!
great critique today. very cool to sit and listen, see great photos and learn. would luv to sit in on more of these.
thanks!
Excellent idea & for a first run, I thought it went pretty well. One thing you might consider doing for a future version is having the images submitted in advance - should help you better gather your thoughts.
I appreciated your thoughts across the board.
enjoyed it! would def love to see more.
dude i really enjoyed the critique its super helpful to hear your thoughts and see how you do when youre behind the camera. thanks for seriously trying to help. ive been shooting about a year and it awesome to sit across the screen from you. i love you work, and respect the heart you put into what you do! thanks again, cant wait till next time
dude it was awesome! thanks so much for doing it! and I can't wait to do it again! it was sweet getting to feel connected to all the other photographers out there! i love being part of the community and it's awesome that your doing this to encourage that community. keep it up man!
It was super cool of you to do that today. Thanks a whole lot. It was as much fun listening to the crits of other people's work (and comparing my thoughts to yours) as it was hearing you talk about my image -- I'm nigelstwin, by the way. The only thing that might make it work better for you would be culling the images you wanna critique ahead of time so that you can be more relaxed about the selection process. You don't need to apologize for awkwardness mostly 'cause you weren't awkward at all. You're a talk show natural!
Other than that, if you ever find yourself in Richmond, VA, look me up. The beer's on me. :)
Bummed I had to miss it. If you do another one in the future, I'll be there for sure. Great, great idea...
I agree with everyone's comments - it was really fun & educational to hear what you liked and didn't like for each photo.
Along the same lines as everyone else, I think having people submit their photos ahead of time would make the whole process run smoother. I was having a hard time following you - sometimes the url for the photo was in the twitcam and sometimes you posted it on twitter. Slightly confusing but I got the hang of it!
Your heart as a teacher was really encouraging, and I appreciated that you didn't belittle anyone if you could tell from their photo they weren't a pro quite yet.
Nice work and let's get together sometime - I live in Nashville too! I met with John Price the other day about photography and he had nothing but awesome things to say about you! :)
Have fun in NYC!
Thanks for the online critique time... very generous and gracious of you. It was really interesting to hear what you had to say about all this different pictures and the way you presented your critique was very helpfull and not crushing at all. I, and I'm sure everyone else, appreciated your choice of words and tact.... as everyone puts a piece of themselves in their work. It was a bummer to not get my picture looked at, but there were SO MANY people it seemed nearly impossible... I guess that happens when you're so popular! :) Thanks again and I'll look forward to the next one...
