London/Dublin

So I'm headed tomorrow to London for 2 weeks and then a couple of days in Dublin. My wife will be joining me for 10 days of that trip for our anniversary. I've been to London but only for a couple of days. Any thoughts/suggestions as to what we should do as a couple? Thoughts as to  some cool places for me to photograph? (Non-touristy suggestions please) I'm really anxious to see Dublin too and shoot some epic landscapes. Any suggestions there? Basically I'm open to hear any thoughts on either city. Thanks.

see if you can take a picture of the London Bridges falling down...that would make a great shot..

take a train from dublin out to bray (about an hour)... seaside town, i think bono has a house there. anyway, has a beautiful cliff you can hike around, great photo ops. train ride is pretty too.

As a local I have so many ideas...

London has some great 2 for 1 entry offers if you travel by train; google 2 for 1 offers. Kew Gardens is included in the offer and attracts real Londoners!

Borough Market is great. It's near London Bridge & Southwark Cathedral. If you go check out Monmouth Coffee - a stall & shop in the market. Fabulous stuff!

You may not have time, but I lived in Yorkshire for about a year and it's a beautiful town with a amazing architecture and great shopping as well! It's about 2hr from London town. Just an idea!

The epic landscapes are mostly on the other side of the island, particularly the northwest, but the Wicklow mountains just below Dublin (where they filmed parts of Braveheart) are pretty spectacular.

Portobello Road Market – Monday-Wednesday.
Obviously Camden Town, obviously.
Make sure you walk along the southbank at night...it's so pretty.
And the London eye is brilliant at dusk-dark also.
Queen Mary’s garden has a gorgeous rose garden that is worth a look.
Patisserie Valerie in Kensington or Convent Garden is a great place for dessert – really unbelievable.
You could take the train down to brighton (on the south coast) for the day – it’s only about 45 mins out of London. There is nothing like the british sea side – on a sunny day – Brighton, particularly the lanes – is so perfectly photogenic.
You should also get fish and chips in Brighton along the seafront :)
You’ll just miss Wimbledon, which is sad.

Everything about London is perfect for taking photos. I don't think you can take a bad picture there. Probably my favorite city I've ever been to. We found this cool old pub near St. Paul's called "Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese". Most of it was underground in like a cellar. When I went to Dublin I took a bus tour down to this place I think it was called Glendlock, just south of the city. The lake is where they filmed part of the movie Excalibur and up against it is the ruins of an ancient monastic city. Also near there is this cool little city called Avoca. They have a really great little wool factory and shop there. Those might be some great places to check out.

These are my favourite spots:

The Borough Market (5min. from London Bridge tube station)

North Greenwich Park (south east London where I live ;))

Roka (modern japanese restaurant) www.rokarestaurant.com

Notting Hill:
Notting Hill's my most favourite place in London, I lived there for a while and still work there.

You should definitely have Pimm's when the weather is nice. The pub Westbourne makes great Pimm's. 101 Westbourne Park Villas, London W2 5ED

Next to Westbourne is Gusto a very cute italian place, great for breakfast, lunch or simply takeaway food with tables outside. Piedro makes great coffee! Westbourne and Gusto are the best places to tank sunshine.

Go to the Portobello Market. Have the red velvet cupcake at Hummingbird's!

Go to Tom's for breakfast or lunch. 226 Westbourne Grove www.tomsdelilondon.co.uk

Churchhill Arm's a must see pub includes a thai restaurant. 119 Kensington Church Street, London, W8 7LN

Dinner at the Oak or just a drink upstairs (the bar ist a must see) www.theoaklondon.com
You can also sit outside.

Also go to Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park. Are the kids going with you? If so you should go to Diana's memorial playground in Kensington Gardens. I can name you more things to do that are nice with children.

Oh and you should visit Hillsong London ;)
Thats in the Dominion Theatre right at Tottenham Court Road Station.

Let me know if you have any questions or want to know more! I could tell you where you could give your wife a nice treat with a manicure and pedicure (BeautyWorksWest, best place to go www.beautyworkswest.com). You could hang out at Tom's for a coffee and check out the shops next door.

Enjoy London! Looks like we are gonna have a wonderful weather the next few days! :)

Hi Jeremy, I'm from Dublin so I reckon I should know a couple of sweet spots! As someone suggested you should get the DART (local train) from Dublin City Southbound in the direction of Bray. Along that route, good places to stop off are Dun Laoghaire (a marina with great views across Dublin bay) Killiney/Dalkey area (this is where Bono lives) which has stunning sea coastal views on a clear day... I wouldn't bother going all the way to Bray, it is not that good. But if you can get over to Glendalough (as 'Jon' suggested) it is a historical monastic site with an amazing lake, v-shaped valley and a graveyard and monastry buildings which is the earliest known Christian settlement. You could take a trip up to Northern Ireland (about 2 hours from Dublin) and see the Giants Causeway, one of the wonders of the world (touristy but incredible!) I will be over in Dublin and Belfast from the 5th June to the 7th June if you want me to show you some places in the cities?? Adam.

I live near London. When I go to shoot, one of my favorite places is docklands and surrounding areas. The architecture is fairly modern but unique because of all the docks. There's boats, office towers, bridges and the millenium dome just across the river.

May 29, 2009 david dewese said...

abby is right about the train in ireland. just hop on the DART in dublin and go south 30 minutes. you'll see amazing places. bono and enya have homes within walking distance from the Kiliney stop. i really enjoy the town of Greystones which is a few stops past that. cute shops, irish sea. there's a walking trail from the Bray stop to the Greystones stop. *you'll* get some epic shots.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/dewese/2720761665

i just got back from ireland sunday and i haven't finished editing down my shots. we went north on the train to howth. another seaside town that has an amazing walk trail through the city and hills. actually, this might be my favorite now.

May 29, 2009 TJ said...

I second or maybe third the DART trip down to Kiliney. The views are amazing and you won't have a hard time finding Bono's home as it is the one with a brick wall covered in autographs and messages from fans.
While in London if you have the chance to spend some time in the countryside it is not to be missed. The Cotswolds are great and if you want to splurge on accomodations book some time at Babington House in Somerset.
Enjoy your time across the pond and I hope you post some photos after you return.

I can give you some contact details of a few local London city photographers. I'm sure they have shot it all. Also the town of warick, not sure thats the name but its where Warick castle is located. The castle is pretty cool itself but if your looking for alot of history and what "you see in the movie" look, try to make it there.

May 29, 2009 jaclyn turner said...

there is a small fishing village called Howth. not far from Dublin, right on the coast. the train goes there. really amazing for taking photographs. no tourists. and amazing fish and chips are to be found.

It would be awesome to do a shoot at Temple Bar in Dublin... really cool place. The coolest cafe in Dublin is Cafe En Seine... look it up... it would be a rad place for a shoot!

Take a walk down Bermondsey street or try to find the Kings Wardrobe in the city. A walk along the south bank as the sun it setting is a must. As is a trip on the london eye as the sun is going down. The weather forecast for the weekend is fantastic sun sun sun.

Great website, have a great time in London.

I'm not sure where in Ireland this is but if you like Guinness Beer. You could take a tour. My cousin did it with his wife. I think it would be pretty cool. Even if you don't like the beer. :)

When we went last year, we really enjoyed taking a boat down the Thames River. Touring the Tower of London is also interesting, and we (especially she, since she's an archeologist) enjoyed the British Museum quite a bit (http://www.britishmuseum.org/).

Jeremy,

Adam Glynn-Finnegan's comments (above) are pure gold - go with some of them and you won't be disappointed (nor will the Mrs). I'm the Irish fella in DM's Blue Like Jazz so can speak from authentic position on Dublin and Ireland - watch out for the security camera's outside Bono's pad in Killiney - if they catch you shooting they'll snatch you and put you in a dark room and force you to listen to Sunday Bloody Sunday non-stop for bleedin' hours.

Enjoy.

Hey guys, I just wanted to say thanks!!!! I really appreciate it. I'm in London now and taking notes from all your comments. I'm here for a while so I'm going to try and see/do it all! The same goes with Dublin once I get there. Can't wait!

May 31, 2009 Boback said...

You didn't like my recommendations ? Must be, cuz I don't see them in the list.

June 01, 2009 adam glynn-finnegan said...

Ryan Anderson, that is a fantastic contribution.
Armed with that level of information I'm sure Jeremy and his wife are in for a trip of a lifetime.
Maybe you know some other spots you could be equally as vague about??!

Brick Lane market (sunday mornings, I believe) is always full of interesting characters and has a bit more of an offbeat flea market feel than many of the other markets in London, which can be very touristy. It's in the East End, an area that is oddly arty/ghetto/trendy all at once, so it could make for some interesting shots.
