Official Facebook "Page"?

It's weird that everyone has a facebook page but there are actual Facebook "Pages" that are only for official businesses. It seems like they could have come up with a better name for that. Anyway, my business now has an official page. Become a fan if you'd like. Gosh that sounds so dumb. Basically, in the next year I'm going to have various events happening. Maybe an art opening or 2 and definitely a book release party for the Passion World Tour book at some point. This page will be a good way for me to make those announcements to the facebook crowd. For the record my opinions of facebook and myspace are forever polarizing. My hate for Myspace is growing and my love for Facebook is growing.

Personally, I still can't stand either Facebook or Myspace. I've become a bit more used to Myspace so it's not as ridiculous to work with, but changes to filtered content and the still-sloppy page code aren't exactly to die for. On the flipside, Facebook is a user-interface nightmare. Sure, it looks pretty, but the design stops there. It's about a functional as one of those plastic display TV's they use in model homes. Things aren't in the places users expect them, their naming conventions (as you mention about "pages") are confusing and often vague, and the fact that you have to add several "applications" to your page to do even modest customization leaves a lot to be desired for many users.

From my own experience, Facebook Pages don't get much traffic. The only place I can see that they're linked to on the site is from the user that owns it's Facebook Page (profile), and even that isn't too prominent. Groups appear to be a much more effective way for companies to interact with their fans/customers.

Yea, Myspace is getting lamer by the day!

I gotta agree that the myspace thing is a mess...I cannot stand to view half the pages because there is so much going on...different sounds popping up, crazy backgrounds, and no real name to go find. I do like finding music on there...but that is it.

I have to disagree with Corey on facebook as I think the simplicity in the interface is what makes it better. It is consistent from page to page and although the "fan page" feature could be integrated a little better, I think it helps keep the business and personal side separate. I also like that the applications have to be added and when using the "new" facebook, you can just turn them off so you don't even have to view them on others' pages.

Also, once you get the fan page out there, it can generate quite a bit of traffic and make it easier to contact people who will want to know any updates you have on your work.

I've recently set myself up with an "official" facebook page too. However I was quite surprised to find this in their T&C:

User Content Posted on the Site

You are solely responsible for the photos, profiles (including your name, image, and likeness), messages, notes, text, information, music, video, advertisements, listings, and other content that you upload, publish or display (hereinafter, "post") on or through the Service or the Site, or transmit to or share with other users (collectively the "User Content"). You may not post, transmit, or share User Content on the Site or Service that you did not create or that you do not have permission to post. You understand and agree that the Company may, but is not obligated to, review the Site and may delete or remove (without notice) any Site Content or User Content in its sole discretion, for any reason or no reason, including User Content that in the sole judgment of the Company violates this Agreement or the Facebook Code of Conduct, or which might be offensive, illegal, or that might violate the rights, harm, or threaten the safety of users or others. You are solely responsible at your sole cost and expense for creating backup copies and replacing any User Content you post or store on the Site or provide to the Company.

When you post User Content to the Site, you authorize and direct us to make such copies thereof as we deem necessary in order to facilitate the posting and storage of the User Content on the Site. By posting User Content to any part of the Site, you automatically grant, and you represent and warrant that you have the right to grant, to the Company an irrevocable, perpetual, non-exclusive, transferable, fully paid, worldwide license (with the right to sublicense) to use, copy, publicly perform, publicly display, reformat, translate, excerpt (in whole or in part) and distribute such User Content for any purpose, commercial, advertising, or otherwise, on or in connection with the Site or the promotion thereof, to prepare derivative works of, or incorporate into other works, such User Content, and to grant and authorize sublicenses of the foregoing. You may remove your User Content from the Site at any time. If you choose to remove your User Content, the license granted above will automatically expire, however you acknowledge that the Company may retain archived copies of your User Content. Facebook does not assert any ownership over your User Content; rather, as between us and you, subject to the rights granted to us in these Terms, you retain full ownership of all of your User Content and any intellectual property rights or other proprietary rights associated with your User Content.

That's quite a major contract we've got going on there without my immediate realisation. However, I'm not sure what they will be able to use a low res jpeg for commercially.
Still, I think it's a poor show on their behalf for writing that in to their T&C. What are your views?

my hatred for MySpace has grown to the point that i literally cannot make myself go there. Facebook has become the go-to page, while virb is in the back of my mind. virb's probably the coolest of the bunch, just not popular enough to warrant all the trouble.

Do you have any photog network sites that you've found useful, such as altpick.com?

Hello. This is kind of an "unconventional" question , but have other visitors asked you how get the menu bar to look like you've got it? I also have a blog and am really looking to alter around the theme, however am scared to death to mess with it for fear of the search engines punishing me. I am very new to all of this ...so i am just not positive exactly how to try to to it all yet. I'll just keep working on it one day at a time Thanks for any help you can offer here

Very interesting way to market on facebook. I also found a way to automate several very powerful methods of getting users. You can harvest ID by groups or pages or wall posts with this software. Then once you have the IDs you can do a friend request to your profile or sudo profile. This by passes the captcha codes too. There is also a cool chat program that you can setup scripts and keyword to work with. This program, when I use it I can see a spike in my site traffic. It is sweet...
