One of my favorite things about being a photographer is that you can barter. I recently approached a gym close to where I live about trading services. They train me and I do some shooting for them. It worked out and we’ve had a great working relationship for a couple years now. 2 weeks ago they had some guys fresh out of college, training for the NFL. Tim Tebow (Florida Quarterback) was one of those guys that I had a chance to shoot some portraits all the guys. Below are a few samples from the shoot.

Fox recently had me shoot the Advertising for their new show “Past Life”. Unfortunately the show has already come and gone but that’s okay. I had a great time with this shoot. I shot this entirely on gray seamless. Usually seamless shoots can get pretty tiring cause you’re shooting with the same lighting on a gray background all day.  But this shoot was different. They brought many different lighting references for me to accomplish throughout the day. Some of the references were my own work which was cool. Overall, it was an incredible challenge to achieve all their different lighting setups but I love a good challenge. Not everything is represented here in terms of what we did with lighting but this still gives you an idea. I also shot all the elements for the hallway shot below and we comped it together in post.

So let’s try this again. I’ve had blogs in the past but let’s be honest. They all sucked. They sucked cause I didn’t “get” blogs. I didn’t know why a photographer needed a blog and I didn’t know why I needed a blog. I had one just cause I felt like I was supposed to. Everyone was doing it. It’s the same these days when I tell others to use Twitter. They try it, don’t fully understand it, give it about 20% and eventually give up. That was my experience with blogs. So all that to say, I’m giving it another whirl. The last 6-9 months has been a whirlwind for me. I’ve learned so much about myself, about photography, about the industry and most importantly what I’m passionate about and where I’m headed. I’ve got a lot to say now. Finally. So hopefully I’ll be using this thing more than I have in the past.

Lastly, I’m going to be posting a lot more images here. As you’ll see below I’ve already got a few shoots posted. Much more of that to come. In fact I’m pretty backlogged with shoots that I’ve never shown but I’ve always wanted to show or talk about. So please be patience as I dig through the archives a little bit.

Also I want to give a huge shoutout to Flosites. They’ve been incredibly patient with me and all my changes. They seriously know their stuff when it comes to blogs. To be honest, this is our temporary effort. What you see now is just tying things over until we can really do something we both love. But this is a much better placeholder than what I had before.

I hope you enjoy. Please leave a comment below and let me know what you’d most like to see here.

I recently had the chance to shoot Zachary Levi for the 4th time. Zach has become a good friend over the years and I can honestly say he’s my favorite male to shoot in the world. Guys are rarely good in front of the camera but Zach just has IT. I guess that’s why he’s so good on TV, right? This shoot was all done at his house. The place is gorgeous but there really wasn’t much to shoot. So what do you do? Well, the floor was the most interesting texture in his house so I had him lay down on his living room hardwood floors and wa-la! We have a magazine cover. I also had a blast riding on the back of his bike. Below are some behind the scenes shots…

I have an ongoing identity crisis with my logo situation. Self-branding might be the hardest thing in the world for me to do. I used to be a graphic designer and to this day, have never been able to figure out what my brand should look like. There’s just so many different things I’m interested in and involved in so it’s hard to sum it up with one mark. So when my crazy talented friend, David Stanfield came up with this logo, it just felt right. It’s not a permanent solution but it makes me happy for now. It just kinda sums me up. Thanks David for the amazing work.

I’m extremely honored to once again have worked with my good friends/one of my favorite bands in existence, Paper Route. If you haven’t heard their music yet please check them out. We recently did a shoot for their upcoming album “Absence”. Here are some of the shots.

My favorite shoots are always the run-n-gun shoots. I love getting together with the artist I’m working with and just heading out together to explore whatever city we’re in. That was the case with Donald Miller (Author of Blue Like Jazz and several other great books). We spent 3 historic days in Washington D.C. last week attending the Presidential Inauguration of Barack Obama, the Mid-Atlantic Inaugural Ball and the Inaugural Prayer Service. The whole experience is easily my favorite experience as a photographer thus far… cooler than shooting Sting or any big TV gig. It will be the story I tell when people say “So tell me some good photoshoot stories.”

I’m so thankful to Don for bringing me along the entire journey. Speaking of Don, he was kind enough to let me post some photos from his shoot on my blog. I rarely get to do that so I was excited when he gave me permission. This shoot is very different from the typical shoot. And that makes me happy. He also let me shoot him like people rarely allow… raw, tired, no hair or makeup team. Nothing you see here would be considered “flattering light”. These photos are the real deal. It’s cool when someone allows such transparency.

I would love to know what kinds of post production produces your organic effects. It's amazing the serendipitous textures you produce without film. You truly are a master of lighting. I was able to see don speak a ecclesia church here in Hollywood a couple weeks ago. He truly is a Davey Crocket of Christianity; questioning the establishment and affirming the foundational precepts that it was founded on. Peace like a river,

I love the startling vulnerability you were able to draw into your lens; it is one of Mr. Miller's most attractive qualities. He photographs so well; the light surveys every delicate line and seems to be emanating from the contours of his handsomely-structured face. Just lovely.
